Celebrating the end of an awesome outdoor season

Published Thu 27 Sep 2018

What an amazing grand final weekend!

If you have not heard already, our CL1 boys won their grand final against Goulburn 2 nil on Saturday to cap off a fantastic weekend of hockey for Wests.

We got the GF weekend off to a great start on Friday night with a win for the U18/2 boys who maintained their undefeated status by beating Central 2-1 (although Central had no goalie which caused some problems for our boys!).  The U18/1 boys had a hard-fought game against Vikings, coming up with a 3-2 win and the midweekers dominated Belconnen with a convincing 4-1 win to finish off a great season for them.

On Saturday morning our SL3 women had an awesome 2-1 win against an undefeated St Pats but unfortunately our SL4 men were unable to complete the fairy tale with circumstances conspiring against them leading to a 2-1 loss to Queanbeyan.

Our CL1 boys showed what they are made of with a clean sheet and two amazing goals by Steady and Gaz to finally get their hands on a somewhat wobbly Premiership trophy.  Garry Backhus was player of the GF and we won the mens club championship for the second year in a row which is an amazing club-wide achievement.

To top it all off, we also had some winners at the HACT Awards night with our CL1 coach, Luke Spokes, appropriately awarded Men's Coach of the Year, Davis Atkin was the most outstanding ACT player at the U18 Australian Championships as well as the most improved CL1 player and Niranjan Gupte was the most outstanding ACT player at the U21 Australian Championships.

And a big thank you to everyone who helped with our amazing season. Without our coaches, managers, umpires, co-ordinators, senior players and committee, we would not have the framework to achieve what we have done this season.  And well done to all our players who have shown commitment and dedication to get so many of our teams into that GF game.

We look forward to doing it all again next year!
