Celebrating the end of another awesome outdoor season

Published Tue 08 Oct 2019

What another amazing grand final weekend we had this year - it has taken a few weeks to get over the excitement of winning 5 from 5!!

We got the GF weekend off to a great start on the Friday night with a win for the U18/2 boys who maintained their undefeated status again this season by beating Grammar in a shoot out after playing most of the game with 10 players and chasing to equalise at 2-all late in the second half.  The U18/1 Wests/Dara boys had a hard-fought game against United, coming up with a 2-0 win, although with 6 minutes to go it looked we were heading for a shoot-out until a magic goal from Ed York broke the deadlock and set up the win.   And the midweekers dominated UC with a convincing 5-2 win to finish off a another great season for them.  The U18's and the midweekers all backed up from premierships last season so that is an amazing effort.

Then on Saturday it was the Men's Capital League double with CL2 beating United 3-1 in a tough game and maintaining their perfect season record right down to the decider.  Seems we have hit on the perfect blend of youth and experience!

Our CL1 boys then won their second grand final in a row, this year against Central with a convincing 4-1 win in difficult conditions having to contend with a downpour mid-game. Despite giving Central a head start, solid defence and 2 goals each to Owen Chivers and Brendan Laidley sealed the win. Owen Chivers was player of the GF and we won the mens club championship for the third year in a row which is a phenomenal club-wide achievement and pretty cool to win in our 50th year.

To top it all off, we also had heaps of winners at the HACT Awards night with our Club President, Deb Mackenzie awarded HACT Administrator of the Year, CL1 coach, Luke Spokes, appropriately awarded Men's Coach of the Year, Anand Gupte won the U21's Significant Contribution to Hockey Award, Davis Atkin was the most outstanding ACT player at the U18 Australian Championships and Jay Macdonald cleaned up with the U18's Significant Contribution to Hockey Award, the ACTAS Power of Potential Award and Most Improved in CL1Men Award.

We had James Jewell, Jay Macdonald and Garry Backhus named in the HACT Men's Team of Year and those players as well as Anand Gupte and Owen Chivers are in the Canberra Chill squad so the hockey season is not over for them yet!

And again, a big thank you to everyone who helped with our amazing season. Without our coaches, managers, umpires, co-ordinators, senior players and committee, we would not have the framework to continue achieve what we have done this season.  And well done to all our players who have shown commitment and dedication to get so many of our teams into that GF game and then the composure to come away with the win.

Well done everyone and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
